Rodolfo “El Panga” Hechavarría Despaigne – Cuban Percussionist (Melbourne)
Rodolfo Hechavarría Despaigne, better known by his musical nickname El Panga, is a self‑taught Cuban percussionist originally from Santiago de Cuba—a city famed for its deep Afro‑Cuban rhythmic traditions.
From a very young age Panga was steeped in music. Growing up in a family of musicians, he absorbed the rich tapestry of Cuban and African‑rooted rhythms—Yoruba, rumba, tumba francesa and tahona—that forged his distinctive rhythmic identity. By the age of eleven he was already performing in carnivals and musical theatre, grounding his style firmly in the vibrant traditions of his homeland.
In the 1990s Panga became a founding member of the influential timba and traditional Cuban ensemble Sonora La Calle.
From 1996 onward he toured extensively throughout Europe, sharing stages with legendary artists such as Buena Vista Social Club, Celia Cruz and Ibrahim Ferrer.
Since relocating to Melbourne in 2006, Panga has emerged as a respected figure on both the local and international music scenes. Renowned for his powerful conga technique and deep expertise across Afro‑Cuban percussion—including batá and folkloric rhythms—he has performed with a wide array of groups spanning Latin, jazz and world‑music genres.
In Melbourne he has played with dance‑driven outfits such as San Lazaro, and has collaborated with artists in jazz and fusion contexts, bringing his authentic Cuban rhythmic voice to stages and recordings across Australia.
Panga’s work underscores the lineage of Cuban percussion, linking African ancestral rhythms to contemporary music while energising audiences with his rhythmic depth and joyous performance style.
